What to do when your flight is canceled

It’s a great idea to be prepared for the unexpected, and that includes your flight being canceled. Here are some great tips for when you find yourself suddenly without a flight.

  • Act fast! If you're at the airport, get in line immediately to rebook. While you're doing this, get on the airline's app and change your flight schedule to next available flight. The faster you do this, the better chance you have of getting the flight you want. If you're at home, adjust your plans by calling the airline directly. If you have a travel agent, always call them first.

  • Remember, you never have to accept the flight the airline auto assigns you. If you see another available flight with the same airline, you have the option to request that flight from the airline.

  • If the cancellation is forcing you to overnight, book a hotel nearby the airport as soon as you can. Chances are other travelers are doing the same. In the event of numerous cancellations, airport hotels can sell out quickly.

  • Save itemized receipts so you can file a claim with your travel insurance. This includes Ubers to/from the airport/hotel, hotel, meals you purchased because of the cancellation, any items you needed to purchase because you didn't have your luggage (toothbrush, etc.).

  • When you return home, immediately send an email to the airline with this message: "Flight number XX was delayed on XX. Per your terms and conditions, I am entitled to compensation, please send that to this email address." You will almost always get a travel voucher for future travel.

Hope this helps during this travel season!
