A Journey Through Amsterdam, the Netherlands & Belgium
Fresh from my trip to the Netherlands, I was so impressed how with how clean, safe, easy to navigate, and just plain charming it was. The locals in Amsterdam were very friendly, and helpful as well as generally happy and easygoing.
Using the Train in Amsterdam
Navigating the trains in Amsterdam is incredibly easy. We used Google Maps to plan our routes, which showed us the correct platform for our destination. However, always double-check the train station monitors, as platform assignments and train times can change!
After landing at Schiphol Airport, we breezed through customs (the easiest experience I’ve ever had!), walked downstairs to the train station, and hopped on a train—so simple!
IMPORTANT: Keep your train ticket easily accessible. You’ll need to scan it at the exit to open the carousel doors and leave the station.
Helpful Tips for Amsterdam
TAP WATER – The tap water in Amsterdam is drinkable and is said to be some of the best in the Netherlands. As a self-proclaimed water snob, I can confirm—it’s great!
BIKING – Amsterdam is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world, and there are plenty of rental options. I recommend booking a hotel that offers bike rentals for added convenience. We paid €18 per person for a full-day rental, which included a built-in tire lock and key. In another nearby city, we rented bikes for just €8 per person, which also included a tire lock and a chain lock.
BIKE NAVIGATION – If you plan to bike, I highly recommend bringing a phone holder for your handlebars. It makes navigating so much easier without having to stop and check your phone constantly. This is the exact one we used.
Must-Do in Amsterdam: A Canal Tour
A canal tour is a must when visiting Amsterdam! I highly recommend booking a private boat tour over the larger tourist-packed options. We used Pure Boats Amsterdam Private Tours and had an amazing experience on their Mini Private Amsterdam Canal Tour. It included a bottle of Prosecco, snacks, and a fantastic guide—definitely worth it!
Must-Try Foods in Amsterdam
FRIES WITH MAYO – A local favorite! We tried several places, and they were all great. Check out this guide for top recommendations.
DUTCH PANCAKES (PANCAKES AMSTERDAM) is a popular chain found throughout the city. We had pancakes here, and they were absolutely delicious.
LUNGO COFFEE – If you want an American-sized coffee, order a lungo. Otherwise, you’ll likely receive a small espresso shot.
PICKLED HERRING – A traditional Dutch dish! I didn’t try it myself, but we did have fried fish at a market, and it was incredibly fresh and flavorful. The tartar sauce was a standout.
DE HAVEN VAN TEXEL – We dined here right on the canal, and it was a beautiful setting with fantastic traditional Dutch food. Highly recommend trying the bitterballen—deep-fried beef balls served with mustard. Yum!
